Man Indicted in Fatal Shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO; DOJ to Seek Death Penalty

Luigi Mangione, 26, has been formally indicted in federal court for the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was gunned down on a Manhattan sidewalk last December. The charges include murder, stalking, and a federal firearms offense.

Mangione now faces both state and federal charges in a high-profile case that has ignited public outrage over the U.S. healthcare system. While the federal charges were unsealed late last year, the official indictment came this week.

The most serious charge—murder using a firearm—could result in the death penalty if Mangione is convicted. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has confirmed the Department of Justice’s intent to pursue capital punishment.

Mangione previously pleaded not guilty to state charges of murder and terrorism. His defense attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, strongly criticized the case, calling the DOJ’s actions “lawless” and vowed to challenge all charges, including those in New York, Pennsylvania, and any additional jurisdictions.

In preparation for a potential death penalty trial, Mangione recently added Avraham Moskowitz to his defense team—a seasoned attorney with experience representing over 50 defendants in capital cases across New York.
